Pfizer’s Bitter Pill

Pfizer is one of the biggest pharmaceutical companies in the world, with 2005 revenues of US$ 51.36 Billion. The New York based company turns our well-known prescription drugs, like the life-saving Viagra, and consumer products like Listerene. Check out your medicine cabinet and you will likely find a Pfizer product.

Pfizer trumpets on its website that “Everyone Should Be Able To Get The Medicines They Need”. Indeed. But only, it seems, if the price is right. And the price is what Pfizer wants it to be.

Bunker mentality

Makati City mayor Jojo Binay has been suspended from office for 60 days pending further investigation of charges of corruption. Predictably, he claims political prosecution. While this might be true to a degree, Binay is no saint. He has ruled Makati like an old-style politico for 20 years, outdoing his predecessor Nemesio Yabut and his fellow law school alum Ferdinand Marcos in perpetrating partronage politics and perpetuating what newpaper columnists call the “Jojo dynasty”. Flying the coop

A recent news item says that more pilots have been leaving the country for greener pastures overseas. Philippine Airlines, Inc. (PAL) has lost about 20% of its pilots over the last three years and more are about to fly the coop. This is an alarming development in our continuing brain drain. Even our best trained and highest compensated professionals are packing their bags. A desperate policy resolution from the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration limiting the number of pilots who can work for international airlines has failed to stem the tide.

Google gobbles up YouTube

Google has bought YouTube for US$1.65 billion. This despite the threats of copyright infringement lawsuits from major entertainment industry players whose copyrighted material are posted in YouTube.

The popular video-sharing site was a natural acquisition for Google, which needed a vehicle to ride the online video wave.

Sex scandal shakes Republican House

There’s nothing like a good old-fashioned sex scandal to liven up the upcoming U.S. congressional elections. Representative Mark “Too Friendly” Foley, a 3-term Congressman from Florida, is under investigation for sending e-mails and sexually explicit instant messages to underage teenage male Congressional pages. It seems that his House colleagues knew of his actvities but looked the other way. Foley was the chair of the Congressional Committee on Missing and Exploited Children, which pursued legislation dealing with sexual predators. It certainly takes one to know one.
