So if we check Wikipedia for Tiananmen Square death toll sources then we have to choose a number from among PRC government, NY Times and Chinese Red Cross.

Hmmm… I would bet my money on the Chinese Red Cross statistics. What’s wrong with the PRC government? Maybe they think four digit numbers are unlucky.

The reported tolls ranged from 200–300 (PRC government figures), to 300–800 (The New York Times), and to 2,000–3,000 (Chinese student associations and Chinese Red Cross).
